Año Nuevo State Park is an amazing nature preserve located on the coast near Pescadero, California. Home to the largest mainland breeding colony in the world for northern elephant seals, the park offers self and guided tours, depending on the season, and highlights the history of nature preservation. Visitors to the park can take the 3-mile round trip Año Nuevo Trail, which eventually leads to sand dunes and the elephant seal colony. While the park is open year-round, the elephant seals come and go depending on the breeding season. Visitors should call ahead to secure a guided tour or permit for the trail. Weird, but true: Año Nuevo Island, which can be seen from the trail, used to be an accessible peninsula. Visitors will see abandoned buildings on the island including a residence and foghorn station built in the late 19th century.
