Pegged as the West Village’s “secret restaurant," Hudson Clearwater manages to be just that without the usual reservation-making headache. The friendly staff is so welcoming on the phone that it’s somewhat jarring to arrive at 447 Hudson only to be greeted by a boarded-up storefront. But this is where the adrenaline kicks in. Once you find the "hidden" green door just off to the side, a peaceful garden patio awaits. With only five outdoor tables, chances are you’ll head inside for a seat, but there are plenty of romantic nooks in the one-and-a-half level spot. The interior is rustic raw wood that relies on marble countertops, floral arrangements, and candlelight for ambiance. Two-tops are the norm here, but the sole downstairs table can seat up to eight. Head chef Wes Long serves perfectly portioned “rustic American” cuisine, but even if you just drop by for a drink you’ll be well taken care of: The excellent Hudson Mule blends Bison Grass Vodka, ginger beer, and lime. Meats, specifically a pork tenderloin special and the grilled hanger steak, are butter-tender if a bit heavy on the salt. Surprising and delectable desserts like butternut-squash cake and a lemon bar with fig compote provide a sweet finish.
