Wed-Thu, 16:00-23:30; Fri-Sat, 16:00-01:30; Salon 39, on a quiet corner in Frederiksberg, is the sister bar to Enghavevej’s Brass Monkey. And in keeping with the family, the brother of Mikkael—the Brass Monkey’s ‘Big Kahuna’—is head barman of Salon 39. Though the bars may well share the same owners, Salon 39 follows a completely different idea; this cocktail bar is like the chic older sister.
Salon 39 is a modern return to the speakeasy style of the early ‘20s with the relaxed vibe coming courtesy of dim lighting, classic Cuban melodies, and an ambient sensibility. It’s not often worth visiting a bar purely for its service but at Salon 39 it’s as impressive as the drinks list: Professional, personal and comes with a history lesson. Prop yourself at the bar and by the night’s end you’ll have learnt all about the whos, whats and whens of whatever drinks you choose to wet your whistle with.
What they create with cocktails is like gastronomy in a glass—they’re cocktail magicians, if you will. Not to ruin the surprise—the menu changes every season—but Salon 39 create flavours and textures well beyond the scope of fruit juice and cream. With a select menu of traditional Italian-style starters and mains, it’s easy to while away the whole night at Salon 39.
