Having first opened in 1984 as a ‘low calorie, high nutrition’ casual dining concept by chef Fernando de Lamare, the Gula Gula restaurant chain has since seen the launch of 12 branches throughout Rio de Janeiro. The city’s health-conscious crowd can’t get enough of Gula Gula’s nutritious yet flavoursome Brazilian-inspired fare. The Ipanema location is one of our favourite spots in the city, set within a 1940s home renovated by architect Angela Leite Barbosa around a beautifully landscaped courtyard. Gula Gula’s atmosphere is both casual yet chic, and is a great place in which to enjoy a light meal during the day, or a more romantic dinner during the evenings. The menu features a variety of salads such as mango and grilled beef served on a bed of fresh greens; or the Caprese with layers of sliced tomatoes, cucumbers, basil and mozzarella cheese. The signature grilled chicken and fish platters is also a highlight, served with a small salad, two side dishes and a choice of sauces for the chicken or fish. Gula Gula also offers a variety of international wines and cocktails, as well as delicious dessert such as fruit strudel or banana crème brûlée to complete the experience. Check their website to find out the locations of all Gula Gula branches in Rio de Janeiro.
