Forging a happy link with family-owned corners of Sussex, chef Oliver Gladwin offers hearty foraged and farmed produce washed down with glasses of South-East fizz: Try small sharing plates of lamb chips and harissa; pigeon with bitterleaf salad and venison carpaccio on for size. This food feels homely but with a knowing foodie twist and you can say as much for the interior too. Jolly from the moment you cross the threshold, ‘The Shed’ is made up of all sorts of tongue-in-cheek rural paraphernalia including bits of an original farm shed and a tractor bonnet above the bar. There are well brought up waitresses in checked shirts and another Gladwin brother as charismatic front of house. Dodging pretentiousness with lashings of youthful enthusiasm, it scores on straightforward cooking and tasty seasonal ingredients./ Maeve Hosea
