DINNER / ambiance st trop
Dining out in Cape Town hardly gets more exclusive than this. A huge abandoned warehouse from which a mammoth wooden deck juts out, separating it from the man-made beach which, in turn, edges onto a wide swath of ocean that curves out from the city's harbour and the Waterfront, the new Grand Café (younger sister to the Camps Bay outlet) was hands down the most talked about Cape Town restaurant during the 2009/2010 summer season. Tables bedecked with flamboyant candles, a 50-meter marble-topped bar counter decorated with baroque white-painted cherubs and backed by a wall of neatly arranged wine bottles, and a massive brick pizza oven at the entrance to the open kitchen are all very chichi, but let's face it, on a summer's night you'll want to be outside on the 'beach', wearing your most expensive Gucci sunglasses, watching the moon cast its glow across the water. Balancing praise for its innovative on-the-beach setting in the otherwise concrete harbourside is deep criticism for the dire door policy and thoroughly kack, snooty service.
