This operating theatre from 1822 is the oldest surviving example of its kind in Britain. It's located in the 300 year old herb garret of St Thomas's Church on the former site of the 12th century St Thomas's Hospital, one of London's oldest hospitals.
Now a small museum of medical history, it's reached by climbing up a narrow spiral staircase of 32 steps. There were very few visitors during my visit, which gave me a chance to look at everything in detail, particularly in the dimly lit herb garret. You can learn all about operations before the days of anaesthesia and occasionally reconstructions of operations are held at this unique slice of London history.
