The Philosopher's Walk in eastern Kyoto is a 1.8 kilometre leisurely stroll down a cherry tree-lined canal from Ginkaku-ji (Silver Pavilion) in the north to Nanzen-ji in the south, with pretty temples dotted along the route.
We set off from Ginkaku-ji, where an elderly Japanese man started a conversation with us and told us how to find a secluded temple and garden, Honen-ji, which was so tranquil as no one else was there. I think we met a total of three people along the Philosopher's Walk, so we were very fortunate as it would have been very different with even one coach load of tourists.
