These days only a few traditional pie and mash shops remain in East London. F Cooke has survived as a family business since 1900 and is known for both its friendly service and good quality liquor, the all important gravy made with parsley and eel stock.
Choose from a beef or vegetarian pie, served with mashed potato and liquor, although on the Saturday we visited, the vegetarian option wasn't available. You might also like to try the jellied eels, a traditional delicacy, but it's not to everyone's taste!
Wash down your meal with a cup of strong builder's tea and have a leisurely chat with the current owner Rob, who was enjoying his pie and mash breakfast with his family when we arrived.
