Higashiyama, or the Eastern Mountains, is one of Kyoto's most charming and well preserved areas. There's no escaping the hordes of schoolchildren on their way up or down from Kiyomizudera temple, so just relax and enjoy all the traditional shops selling food and arts and crafts.

We had lunch at the famous Okutan, a yudofu ryori restaurant that serves only top quality Kyoto tofu prepared in different ways. There are two branches and booking is essential as it attracts many celebrities and is therefore very popular with locals and visitors to Kyoto.

We were seated by the beautiful Zen garden on tatami mats and ordered the yudofu and special tofu courses. Dishes included yams soup, sesame tofu with wasabi, grilled tofu with sweet miso and vegetable tempura, followed by the yudofu itself.
