Opened in 1839, Highgate Cemetery is divided into the West and East sides, the latter added in 1860.
In the more famous East side where Karl Marx is buried, you can walk around on your own (£4 entry) or join a guided tour on Saturdays at 14.00 (£8). East opening times are Mon-Fri 10.00-17.00 and weekends 11.00-17.00.
The older West side can only be visited by joining a one hour guided tour (£12) on Mon-Fri at 13.45 (this must be booked online) and weekends 11.00-16.00 every 30 minutes (no need to book, only 16 places on each tour). The West tour ticket also includes entry to the East side. The tour is highly recommended and our guide was extremely knowledgeable and full of interesting facts.
There are also occasional evening tours of both East and West, so look out for those on the website. And don't forget to wear sensible shoes or boots as the ground can be muddy.
