Note

The Romanesque cathedral was built in the 12th century by the first king of Portugal, D. Afonso Henriques soon after he recaptured the city from the Moors. It was built on top of the ruins of an old mosque to emphasize the power of Christianity. Its gothic cloister is a scene of excavation.
