Note

Although the construction of the Monastery was begun in 1501 during the reign of D. Manuel I., it took almost a century to finish. Its architecture style varies from the late Gothic to the Renaissance, denominated by the unique Manueline decoration. The building commemorates the Golden Age of the Portuguese Discoveries and is a symbol of Portuguese culture and national identity, and was classified as a World Heritage Site by UNESCO in 1984.
