Note

Constructed in 1849, the oldest surviving synagogue in New York City now is a soaring art space. Built by Berlin architect Alexander Saeltzer as a place of worship that would rival the Cologne Cathedral, and before beeing demolished due to a vanishing Jewish population in New York, it was Jewish-Spanish sculptor Angel Orensanz converting it into a studio and gallery space in 1986.

Maintaining its original architecture, it is now hosting art exhibitions and events, including concerts from the likes of Philip Glass and Lou Reed.
