So a cemetery may not spring to mind at the top of your places to visit but Brompton Cemetery was established in 1836 and is regarded as one of the finest examples of Victorian Metropolitan Cemeteries in the country. The layout is formal with a central avenue leading to a chapel whose design was based on St Peter's Basilica in Rome and there are over 35,000 monuments here of historical importance. The cemetery covers over 16.5 hectares and makes a lovely place to wander and explore off the beaten track. Open daily in summer 8am to 8pm.
