Spathe Public House. Singapore, Singapore

The name sounds more like a Roman bath house, but Spathe (pronounced ‘speyth’) is far from your average neigbourhood casual diner with a quirky title. Taking up residence in a pre-war shophouse in River Valley, the 50-seater dining space is all grunge and funk, boasting R&B music and exposed brick walls adorned with colourful, hand-drawn murals and graffiti. Headed by the team behind Fullerton’s fine-dining French restaurant Boathouse, the emphasis is on fresh ingredients and bold flavours; there’s an eclectic mix of Spanish and French-inspired dishes designed for sharing. Think duck confit puffs ($18 for an individual portion, $38 to share), a yellowfin tuna poke ($18) and sous vide octopus salad ($18/$38) to start, followed by the Chicken & the Sea paella ($25/$78) and potato gnocchi ($18) for mains. Set lunches are available at very affordable prices too – $13 will get you a salad and a main course.
