Marum Training Restaurant is an initiative of the not-for-profit organisation Friends International which works with street children and youths and provides them with practical skills to live life productively away from the streets. The restaurant is located in a local village a short distance over the river from the Royal Gardens. It is set in a lovely garden with fairy lights and candles. Seating is outside in the garden or, if you would prefer, inside in the house which is colourfully decorated with the art work of children who have participated in Friends programs. The menu is Khmer and fusion dishes with the option of small tapas style plates which allow you to try a range of different flavours, or larger more substantial meals. The food is fresh, creative, colourful and delicious. Coconut and lime shakes are highly recommended as are the selection of cocktails. If you would like to try some more exotic Cambodian cuisine then the red ant patties will certainly satisfy. Next to the restaurant is a shop selling products made by former street youths and their families some of which are made from recycled materials. The Friends cookbooks, jewellery, t-shirts, children’s toys and a range of other colourful and creative products make great gifts.
