Beef barbecue in the Wat Damnak area, (just over the bridge and turn to the right from Old Market), is popular among local people. Seven or eight local restaurants cook up a storm on the grills set up outside their restaurants. A bit different to barbecue served up in European countries Cambodians love to dip their beef in fish paste (prahoc) which has been mixed with ingredients such as lemongrass giving it an aromatic flavour. Besides the beef, the restaurants serve up some exotic dishes such as grilled young beehives (domestically raised beehives with bee larvae) which taste a little sweet and juicy and provide a refreshing snack, and stir-fry eel with lemon grass. If you are game to try it then each dish will cost around USD2 and beer to wash it all down is around USD1 a bottle.
