The French government built the Phnom Penh Railway Station in 1932 to serve the railway linking Phnom Penh with Battambang and Thailand. Overtime the line and the railway station were damaged due to neglect and civil war, and trains were not operating for a period in 2009 – 10. In recent times the Australian Government and Asia Development Bank together with investors have rehabilitated sections of the railway and trains are running. The service caters mainly for freight and not for passengers. One interesting thing about Phnom Penh railway station is its French colonial architecture and history. The building was the site of a secret meeting in 1960 which was later held to be the founding date of the Khmer Rouge regime. It was also the location of the first meeting of the Khmer Rouge leadership in April 1975 following the fall of Phnom Penh. It was at that meeting that a decision to evacuate all the cities in Cambodia was taken. The railway station building was renovated in 2012 and it is a photogenic as well as historic building.
