The Royal Gardens is one of Siem Reap’s only public green areas where you can walk, exercise, or take a seat and watch the world go by. Irises, frangipani, neatly trimmed hedges, a fountain, and tall trees provide a pleasant shady oasis from the surrounding streets.
The trees are home to a large colony of fruit bats and at night you will see them circling the sky as they return home to the trees to roost. On one corner of the Royal Gardens is the small but busy temple of Preah Ang Chek and Preah Ang Chom and on a traffic aisle in the road opposite a small shrine to Ya Tep.
Ya Tep is a spirit who is said to bring everything from children to the barren to lottery numbers to the poor. You will often hear traditional music being played at the site and see monks and locals giving alms and blessings here. Incense and flowers can be purchased outside the temple for offerings.
