Artisans D'Angkor is a Cambodian not-for-profit company established to help young rural people find work near their village and to promote the revival of traditional Khmer art and crafts.
Established in the late 1990s, Artisan D'Angkor now provides employment for some 1300 employees including 900 artists. Over the years, Artisans D'Angkor has become a showcase for high quality Khmer traditional arts including silk, stone, wood carving, lacquerware, silver plating, and silk painting. The products are all handmade, some reflecting the history of Cambodia, while others feature more modern designs.
While not inexpensive, the products are beautiful, professionally made, and it is reassuring to know that Artisans D'Angkor artists receive fair conditions and pay. While artists work in the community in 42 different workshops located near their homes, there are two that are open to visitors in Siem Reap. The Artisans D'Angkor showroom near the centre of town in Stung Thmey Street showcases stone carving, lacquerware making, wood carving, and silver plating. The Angkor Silk farm located in Pouk district around 15km from Siem Reap provides free guided tours of the process from growing mulberry trees through to harvesting silk and producing beautiful silk fabrics and accessories.
