Christopher Street. New York, United States

The story of this tiny street is extremely intriguing. An international symbol of gay pride, Christopher Street was the epicenter of the gay rights movement in the late 1960's. The street housed the legendary Stonewall Inn, operated by the Mafia, and known as THE gay bar of its time. It was a sanctuary for gays, lesbians, drag queens, and transgenders; a place where they could congregate without fear of police intervention.

This place was ultimately the location of the "Stonewall" riots, a series of spontaneous, violent demonstrations by members of the gay community against a police raid. They are widely considered to constitute the single most important event leading to the gay liberation movement. Echoes of the past still resonate in the area, as it is known to house many flamboyant residents and is clustered with various sex shops. Definitely swing by Christopher Street for some top-notch culture and to check out the Stonewall Inn, an integral part of the gay rights movement.
