Originating in Hanoi, Cha Ca (grilled fish) is definitely on the 'must try' list when visiting the city. It consists of either snakehead fish or catfish marinated with turmeric, which is then fried and served on a hot pan in front of you with generous helpings of dill. Just add in the condiments of fish sauce, spring onion, noodles and peanuts, mix it all together and you will wonder where this delectable dish has been all your life.
All the guidebooks direct you to the famous Cha Ca restaurant on Cha Ca Street, but best to avoid this overpriced and underwhelming tourist trap and head out to the simple Cha Ca Anh Vu restaurant in Dong Da district, which serves only this dish and is considedered by locals to be the best Cha Ca in town.
There are two seperate sections of Giang Vo Street with the number 116, the restaurant location is near the Giang Vo Exhibition Centre and is #116K1. When you get there, there is a copy restaurant virtually next door with the same number (surely flattery at its best!) but just head straight to the one with far more people in it on the right hand side if your back is to the road.
