Note

Operating from 1829 until 1971, ESP is a former prison that held inmates including Al Capone and Willie Sutton. The most expensive public structure ever erected at the time of its completion, Eastern State Penitentiary was a blueprint for over 300 prisons.

Now it's a public museum, and the penitentiary is open seven days a week for tours. If you're visiting in the fall - don't miss when the entire prison turns into a haunted house for Terror Behind the Walls.
