I went here earlier today for lunch. The decor is great and fun and seems to resemble the style of an American diner. We served by Liam who was pleasant, friendly, chatty and efficient. What he didn't know about the contents of the menu, he was quick to find out and report back. He was competent with the handling of taking our order by tablet which was also the same unit used for paying the bill with a debit card. Excellent.
There was plenty of staff around the kitchen area which looked fairly open planned and gives a 'nothing to hide' impression. One of the staff wore dirty trousers/jeans which needed to be kept out of view of the diners.
At the back of the dining area is another table that seems to be used for staff during less busy periods. I don't enjoy seeing staff seated in the dining area, but just a personal preference.
We were there around 12noon and during our time there, there were another 7 diners. I expressed to Liam that I was thirsty while I placed my order of food and a milkshake and he offered to get me a glass water which was a nice touch, as I hadn't asked for it. There was no charge for that of course.
He advised us that as the food was freshly cooked, that it would take 30 minutes... This is not good in a cafe restaurant where the parking outside has a one hour limit, but it didn't half an hour... it was more like 20 minutes which I don't think is unreasonable. Added to this, the quality of the food was outstanding. The milkshakes are massive (lol) - well the large ones were and we had a banana and salted caramel one which was just fantastic. The Long Tall Sally was perfect and the At The Hop Chicken burger was also cooked perfectly. There is no question, the food is lovely.
Just another slight failing is the inadequate extractor hood over the grill. It can get quite smokey in the dining area very quickly and my clothes smelled of cooked food back in the car and at home. We mentioned this to them, they were apologetic and they are on the case and looking to fit another extractor to cope with busy times when the grill is in constant use. I consider that they deserve to be cut some slack as they are a brand new diner that have only been open for 11 days and that this a teething problem for a new business. Also, they are a friendly bunch and they tried to make it as comfortable as possible by battling with keeping the dining area warm but ventilated.
I worry how they will cope in times of extreme busy periods, particularly if patrons are not going to be sympathetic and allow them time to perfect the service and iron out these minor issues.
I loved it there and the funky menus shaped as 12" vinyls and presented in actual album covers is reason enough to make me want to take other friends there for the experience. The milkshakes are the nuts and the food is reasonably priced... not cheap and not expensive.
I wish them well and hope they succeed.
