A lovely Islington pub in a mid-1800s building, where unusually the meat arrives directly from the farm to be butchered, smoked and cured on site.
The Pig and Butcher specialises in British rare breeds of beef, pork and lamb, so you've come to the right place if you're a meat lover. However, the fish comes directly from the south coast, including Cornish sardines. All the dishes are seasonal and simply prepared.
On our visit, we had Wye Valley asparagus & fried duck egg; marinated heritage tomatoes, razor clams & lovage; grilled lemon sole, Jersey Royals & green sauce; blackface lamb leg, Ras el Hanout & yellow string bean & artichoke tagine.
Out of all the pubs I've tried recently, this is one of my favourites.
