This magnificent site in Chelsea was founded in 1673 as the Apocatheries' Garden for training apprentices to identify plants. It is also London's oldest botanic garden and the second oldest in the UK.
Being located near the Thames and surrounded by high brick walls means the garden has its own special microclimate. Of course it's not as big as Kew Gardens, but it's definitely worth visiting and is among my favourite London destinations. Join a free tour or take the audio guide, to learn more about the garden and plants.
The Tangerine Dream Cafe serves delicious seasonal dishes as well as the popular afternoon tea of freshly baked lavender scones, clotted cream and homemade jam. Sit outside and enjoy the sunshine.
Also check the website for special winter event days such as the February Snowdrop Days and the weekend Christmas Fair.
Opening hours: between end of March to end of October (check website for exact dates as garden is closed in the winter).
Tue-Fri, Sun - 11.00-18.00
