Both Friends Restaurant and the next door shop Friends ‘n’ Stuff are run by the not-for-profit organisation Friends International. Friends works with street children and youths and provides them with practical skills to live life productively away from the streets.
One of its initiatives is training street youths in hospitality and service. The restaurant and shop act as a training ground for the students.
Friends Restaurant is a beautifully decorated building a short distance from the National Museum and Royal Palace. Colourful artwork from the students hangs on the walls. The menu is international with a fusion of Asian and Western styles. Many dishes are small tapas style plates which allow you to try a range of different flavours. Two to three smaller dishes should satisfy most people and perhaps leave space for dessert. The food is fresh, creative, colourful, and delicious. Fruit shakes are a specialty.
In the Friends 'n' Stuff shop next to the restaurant you can find a range of products made by former street youths and their families, some of which are made from recycled materials.
The Friends cookbooks, jewellery, t-shirts and clothes, bags, cards, children’s toys and a range of other colourful and creative products make great gifts. They also have a nail spa where you can schedule a relaxing manicure and pedicure.
